Google Assistant-powered Smart Displays from Lenovo now available on sale

Smart Displays are Google’s attempt to take the fight to Amazon who is already selling something similar in the form of Echo Spot, and Echo Show.

Google is rolling out Google Assistant-powered Smart Display across the United States through a partnership with Lenovo. The company initially announced the Smart Speakers back during its annual developer’s conference, Google I/O 2018. Smart Display is Google’s attempt to take the fight to Amazon who is already selling something similar in the form of Echo Spot, Echo Show, and the recently announced “Show Mode” that turns any Amazon Fire HD 8, and Fire HD 10 tablet currently available in the market into a full-fledged Echo Show. As explained at Google I/O, Smart Display is “a new category of devices” aimed at smart homes.

The device brings “an interactive screen” with “a richer visual experience”. Google posted a new post on its official blog to share details about the rollout of Smart Displays. According to the post, Smart Display comes with Google services including Google Photos, Maps, YouTube, Calendar, and Duo. According to the post, in addition to Google apps, users can also use third-party apps to perform a number of functions. These functions include listening to music, catching up on news, and podcasts, or hearing to an audiobook.



The post goes on to explain all the different apps available to complete the activities mentioned above. To recap, users can use YouTube Music, Google Play Music, Spotify, and Pandora to stay updated with the latest and greatest from the world of music. Smart Display also gives users access to Google News along with content from CNBC, CBS and others along with the option to listen to podcasts through Google Podcasts. Google has also added support for iHeartRadio and TuneIn if anyone wants to catch their favorite radio stations. Google has also added support to Google Play Books if they want to listen to their audiobooks.



The company also stated that YouTube Prime subscribers will be able to watch videos directly from the Smart Display without the need for any additional display. The company is also giving away three months worth of free YouTube Premium subscription. If the users have a YouTubeTV subscription then they can even use the Smart Display to watch Live TV. The device also supports HBO Now, Google Play Movies & TV, and Crackle. Some users can also use it as a step-by-step instruction guide to help them in their cooking experiments. Last but not the least, as previously mentioned, users can ask the Smart Display to make calls with the help of Google Duo or basically carry out any number of functions that are supported by Google Assistant.

According to the announcement post, Lenovo has priced the 8-inch Smart Display for $199.99 and larger 10-inch FHD panel at $249. Google is planning to launch more Smart Display in coming weeks with LG, and JBL. The company has not issued any statement about plans to launch the device in the Indian market.
