Face ID on the other hand is expected to only work in portrait mode
Apple is expected to launch its new series of iPad Pro this year. The new models are said to feature some radical changes. Only a couple of days ago, it was reported that this year’s iPad Pro lineup will come with support for Face ID and Animoji, just like the iPhone X. A new report from Macotakara adds fuel to the fire by shedding more light on the Face ID feature, while also suggesting the omission of the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Macotakara has had a decent track record with rumors in the past. In its latest report, the website suggests that Apple is planning on ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack in the iPad Pro lineup this year. This means that the new iPads will come with a Lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter, just like the new range of iPhones.
Besides that, the report also states the iPads to support Face ID. However, it was noted that the feature would only work in portrait mode. That means, users won’t be able to unlock the iPad, while using it horizontally. To adapt to this feature, the website claims that Apple is also moving the Smart Connector on the 2018 iPads to the bottom, closer to the Lightning connector. This means that the latest iPads, will be vertically aligned, when connected to a Smart keyboard. How and why Apple could be planning to do this, is unclear at the moment.
Besides this, the website also shed some light on the dimensions of the new iPad Pro series. It was noted that the 10.5-inch variant will come with 247.5mm (H) x 178.7mm (W) x 6mm (T) dimensions, while the 12.9-inch model could feature 280mm (H) x 215mm (W) x 6.4mm (T). Both variants seem to have reduced in size a little compared to their predecessors. This could also be because Apple is trying to reduce the footprint, by cutting down on bezels. The new iPads are expected to arrive alongside the new iPhone lineup in September.
