Over the last few years, we've seen a slew of big-name brands — including Ulta, L'Oréal, Sephora, and Sally Beauty — launch their own virtual beauty experiences. Now Pinterest is officially following suit with its brand-new Try On feature, which allows users to (you guessed it) try on makeup before buying. It's kicking off its latest project with lipstick.
According to a press release, the new feature lets folks try on products from fan-favorite brands like Lancôme, Urban Decay, Sephora, BareMinerals, and a lot more through its mobile app so that they can see exactly what the lipstick will look like on before committing to buying it. It couldn't be easier to use, either: You just open Pinterest’s smart camera, or "Lens," and then click "Try it" to peruse all of the different lipstick options available.
Additionally, users can access the feature by searching for terms such as "red lipstick," "nude lips," or "pink lipstick color." As if that weren't enough, you can also hit "Browse More Like This," and it will show you a range of Pins with similar looks.
What's more: The feature will not change your skin tone in any way, so you can be 100 percent sure what the lipstick will look like when you finally apply it. "With Try On, you won’t find skin-smoothing or image-altering effects that make you look less like you (as you might see on some other AR technologies).
We believe in celebrating you, and so our AR won’t be augmenting your reality, but rather helping you to make happy and real purchases for your life," says Pinterest. It's also been assimilated into the brand's current skin-tone range feature, which means people can search for lip colors on complexions that look like theirs.
Pinterest decided to start off with lipstick because it's one of the most-searched beauty products on the platform, so it just made the most sense. The brand is due to roll out more beauty products and categories down the line — in the meantime, you can start playing with Try On as of today, Tuesday, January 28.
