PUBG no more as popular as it was in 2018, loses 82 per cent players despite new updates

PUBG has lost a vast number of players since it peaked in January 2018 with the highest number of active players. The developers are trying to bring back players with new content updates.

PUBG MOBILE is easily one of the best games for mobile currently and with all the content updates coming one after the other, it seems it will stay that way. However, the same cannot be said for the original PC version that debuted long before the mobile version hit the app stores. If you look at the number of active players, it appears that PUBG on PC has lost almost 82 percent of its players compared to the days when the number peaked at 15.8 lakhs.

The recent data from Steam, the platform via which PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG) is available for PCs, shows that the popular battle royale game has been losing the number of active players by a vast margin.

In fact, compared to the days when PUBG was peaking at 1,584,886 on an average for active players back in January 2018, the current numbers on Steam for PUBG stand at 288,848. That's a massive drop in the number of players and it looks bad given the situation is opposite for the mobile version of the game.

While battle royale games had come before, PUBG with its introduction in late 2017 made the genre popular and inspired a host of other similar titles from other publications. However, newer titles such as Fortnite and EA's Apex Legends came and overtook PUBG with different engagement strategies. Fortnite, for instance, offers cross-platform gameplay and keeps on updating the game regularly with new content.

Similarly, EA was late to the battle royale party with its Apex Legends but the game found success within a short span of time and right now, is the flagship title for EA with plans made to port it to the next-gen consoles. EA is even considering bringing the game to mobile platforms by 2021.

In comparison, the updates to PUBG have been marginal. On top of that, the military-style survival theme has been done so well by PUBG itself that players are looking forward to something new and fresh.

Fortnite recently did a mega refresh after the Season 10 ended, devouring the old map into a blackhole and bringing a completely new map with fresh new features. Similarly, Apex Legends also keeps on updating its content to keep the game relevant. Even PUBG MOBILE goes for more frequent updates to hold on to its number one position.

However, the developers are now introducing some content updates to the game. Players will now have easy access to painkillers and energy drinks through vending machines throughout the map. There's also a new Survivor Pass Badlands with the new season and new Community Mission System.
